School's in

Okay, hi everyone.

Well, it's another school week and this week I have homework! I totally forgot about that part! Oh well, it seems to be manageable, though there were a few readings that I found to be a bit of a slog to get through. In the end it's all good though. It feels weird to think about the people I'm studying with though, and our classes are often discussions that we are meant to intelligently contribute to, and it's very easy to feel intimidated.

Although I am also taking this seriously, I want to have fun aso keeping things marginally lighthearted is important. Everybody is so SERIOUS, like every example to explain a point has to be about their recent research or the state of the universe, which I can understand, but occasionally, throw something else in there, eh? What I don't get if when the prof throws you a gimme and you can say anything you want to show you get the concept, choose something mildly entertaining or non-environmental because heaven knows there will be time later in the class where there will be no choice at all. Anyway, it's funny.

The other day a girl in my class asked me 'so which non-profit do you work for?' and it was all I could do to not roll my eyes so far back into my head I could see what I was thinking. In her defense I think she just mis-heard me, but all the same I felt amused.

However, despite my (good-natured) ribbing, my class seems to be pretty great and the people are varied an interesting. I like my adviser, whom I just spent some time with today. She has a fold-up bike!

There's lots of green stuff going on in Waterloo to take advantage of, like some undergrads here have organized it with the university to have a weekly farmer's market of local produce every wednesday here at school, as if anything could be more convenient. Yay undergrads!

Other than that, it's scholarship application time, whee! As usual, I will be doing everything at the last possible second, since I have to get my scotland transcript translated and apparently that's an impossible task so it's taking an extra long time. I also found out that I can't apply for another major scholarship because my average in 4th year was 0.4% too low. Awesome! I had a little rage blackout on that one, but hey I guess it's one less essay to write? One less $17,000 cheque to cash? heh.

Anyhoo, it probably only means that I'll try and TA a bit more later on and I won't be doing my thesis research in Mongolia or somewhere exotic. Aaaaand, that's okay.

Other than that, we spent the weekend at Algonquin Park having a great time. We were swimming and canoeing and hanging out with the newlyweds and new friends and it was good times. Quite a drive out there, but it was mega worth it. Yay camping! It made me realize that there are a few things we need to rond out our camping gear, but then, I'll always want more/better tstuff. Chairs would be cool though.

So that's that! This weekend I'm expecting a family visit and Rob's got a few more gigs on the way, so that's good. Things are settling down finally, especially because Rob's doing lots of the work at home while I'm at school. I'm loving the clean house as I get in the door, that's for sure.

Okey doke. Hope this wasn't too boring, I'll let you know as things sort of unfold over time as per the ususal.
xoxo

ahhh school. doesn't ever change, does it?

here's a stupid question about your scotland transcript - why do you have to translate it? Isn't it in English already?

And I totally hear you on the 0.4 percent. I missed my scholarship in 3rd year because of a measly 0.4 percent too. It must be a conspiracy.

Hope you and r (and the worms) are comfortably settled soon. Send us your address please!

oh, the scottish transcript needed to be 'translated' from scottish non-numeric grades to waterloo percentages. It endex up being very complicated and surprisingly by-the-seat-of-their-pants, butr there you go. :-) Address to come in e-mail soon!
