1. I'm way happier than I was before. Our plans have changes and I think that's part of it. Also, I think I got over not being done my thesis in August (defended, that is).
2. We have cancelled the bike trip (postponed to another time) and decided to concentrate on doing everything we can to get jobs in Whitehorse. We hope to be out there with a place in October. That would be ideal. We'll see. Plan B is BC.
3. Rob already found 2 good jobs with benefits in Whitehorse paying 2x what he was getting at RIM to apply for. Both are good career starting positions, and one with the federal government. We'll see. The long term goal for him remains canada post. But, there's interesting work for him, so that's promising.
4. I haven't exactly found a job to apply for, but I have connections in the town and as it turns out, Whitehorse is WILD about sustainability and is launching programs and all kinds of stuff, so I'm preparing a letter of interest to send out with my resume. Fingers crossed!
5. We have both been reading blogs, looking at pictures, talking about it and we both really hope we make it up there. There's a huge music scene, wonderful winter sports (!!!) we'd get to try out a small town, we'd be somewhere new to both of us and we'd have access to career development not available to us in the south. You get to do more when there are fewer people to specialize. PLus, with both of us on decent salaries, as long as we're not burning cash travelling to northern events all the time we could actually accumulate savings. We'll see. There are a LOT or amazing northern events!
6. I am not done my thesis. It is interesting, exciting, and the biggest thorn in both of our sides. Not going on the trip has made it all so much easier to manage, mentally. Things are going well and it's shaping up nicely.
7. Regardless of whether we go to Whitehorse or BC, we plan to drive the van there. It's a reasonable compromise for us because of several things: Rob cannot live without the van and shipping it is prohibitive; we have to transport the cats; renting a uhaul even just o vancouver is over $2000 before gas. May as well dump the money into the van we know. Plus, road trip! I'll finally get to see the prairies! (other than Selkirk, which I remember more as a back yard, a grain silo and the chip wagon).
8. Since all this happened Rob and a few of his friends have been putting in 10 hour days on the van, doing all the body work. He's going to paint it Smurf blue, which I think is perfect. He's as happy as a pig in slop and I've got the place to myself for typing.
9. Our apartment looks like we've been robbed, but the bloody thief couldn't even take anything with him. This week we expect to either sell or curb the furniture though and that will make a big difference. We are slowly starting to use our camping pots and things as stuff gets packed. The system is, give away anything we can stand to, pack what we'll keep and it gets labelled as #1 or #2..#1 will be packed as starter kit in the van, and #2 goes to storage. Things we like but can cheaply get where we land (pyrex bows etc) or don't need yet (paintings and decor). We've been ditching at an olympic level which is fantastic.
10. I just watched Ludwig chase a fly and body check the banjo rob made for me. Awesome tune and he never even heard it! Didn't catch the fly either, but that's Ludwig for ya.
11. Rob and I are both concerned about gong north as there are lots of husky type dogs that get dumped at shelters because they are too old or not fast enough for mushing dog sledding). This may be more of an alaskan thing, but we are going to have to work hard and steer clear of any dog shelters or else we'll have a team of our own. A slow, old team. Which we would love.
12. I went to the dentist! That is just the type of sad garbage that makes me feel accomplished these days. But it has been a while. It was s great experience. My teeth are cleaned, she took care of a small cavity and also a potential cavity (bonus!) and I have 100% coverage, so yay me.
13. I guess that's it. Not much more to take care of except continue to pack, write, set up interviews and figure out what to wear at a wedding. How about mukluks?
