A list, so I don't feel too overwhelmed to write something at all.
1. I joined an intramural softball team and I really forgot how much I freaking love playing catch. I really, really freaking love playing catch. Yay!
2. I was googling around looking for resources on a particular guy I mention in my thesis and it turns out that the last and most extensive interview this dude (Saul Alinsky) ever did was with Playboy, in 1976 (72?). So, okay, I head out to the local used book store and look through the collection of old playboys and lo, the issue is there and the interview is PHENOMINAL.
Side note: while I was in the playboy section (also the everything else smutty section) this one guy kept circulating and going back to the mystery paperbacks until I left and he made a beeline for Hustler or whatever. Too shy to shop for porn with a girl around! Aw!
Anyway, the Playboy I got is about 200 pages long, the interview is like 10 pages long (or so) and there are maybe 8-10 pages featuring topless girls or cartoons. The rest of the thing is articles on the war in Vietnam, the feminist movement, a novella by Micheal Crichton and pretty freaking awesome literary stuff. Who the hell knew you could legitimately want Playboy for the articles! Now I need another issue with another great interview for my thesis, but I'm thinking I'm going to genuinely start collecting these things. The issues I like aren't particularly rare so I'm going to try and get lots of random magazines on their way out to recycling from someone's basement. The social commentary is really great, and so far, I'm kind of really excited about Playboy! (Ew, only the old ones though...the 80's are the end of good interviews and I imagine the articles suck too, and I suspect the girls less interesting and more creepy and "hungry like the wolf"). I'm going to collect no further than April 1981.
So there that is. I'll let you know if I still like the magazine later and read more about it. What do people think about Playboy? Old school PB seems to be pretty cool.
3. My friend had her bike stolen last night. The big super fat wire lock was cut clean though. So, if you love your bike, maybe have 2 locks. No lock is impenetrable but a thief choosing between 2 steps and one might choose someone else's bike. :-( Boo on that though, what a crappy feeling.
4. I pulled out the juicer again and we are making fresh yum juices. I'm thinking I will juice citrus by hand because I think I lose too much nutrition from the pulp shot out of the chute. The juicer is better for pineapples, melons and vegetables. Still good though! I think I'm going to shell out for a mini kiddie stainless steel water bottle so I can take small amounts of juice or milk with me to school or waling around. I hate to buy juice at school (hate to buy anything at school) so I think I will invest. So exciting, I know. BUT try this: grapefruit, strawberry banana juice. Squeeze the grapefruit (2-3), then throw thawed (from frozen for mega-juice) strawberries (5-6) and a banana in a bowl and blend that em eff. Super delish, nothing wasted and cheap as chips.
5. I frigging hate library over due fines. Also, UW? Sending me a notice come tax time "thanking me for my kind donation of $150" it makes me want to fleece you in every way that I possible can in every other aspect of my time there. My "donation" was all kind of fees I was charged, $50/semester. I think my "gift" to UW is not actually stealing and selling the furniture in the damn grad lounge. So far.
6. A 500 mL chocolate milk has 62 g of sugar. Like, is that really necessary?
7. My flip flops, sent to me from Christian Heaven via Brazil and Sears Catalogue for my good deeds plus $12, have arrived and my feet are once again floating on pillows of recyclable glory, like in the days of my Canada trip. I lost one, it was tragic, I brooded and couldn't remember the brand name. Then, I recalled that I have this weird thing where everywhere I go I take a picture of my feet, and I recently found a picture of the sandals (3 years later!). I had the brand name and those babies were catalogue only! I got my pair and am back in love. Ginga, may we never be separated again, so says me and every person who had to live though my deep and unrelenting sorrow over my loss, lo those many years ago.
8. Concert with Islands coming up this weekend. Should be good times...the summer is filling with weddings, parties, plans and excitement. Could be worse, I'll tell you what.
9. We're still thinking West is Best for next plan, but it depends on the job sitch and how hard it is to work wherever. I still fantasize about a long unfettered cycling trip whiling away the weeks wandering from town to town and caping our little hearts out. But what about the cats?
10. Thank Shatner (not mine, but I think its funny), the sun is here, making me forget the snow (I still miss it) but the air is cool not making sleeping a nightmare quite yet. I got a tip from my Aunt from when she was younger, she would put a smooth river rock in her bed to cool her feet at night. I'm so going to try that, but I wonder, as you move round at night, couldn't you stub your toe?
11. I dream of the cottage and a considering taking a sabbatical writing retreat there. Where there is nothing but lake, booze and a freaking document on Word looking for a little loving. Sounds like a masterpiece in the making, no?
12. I think I may stray to the vending machine, since I discovered that I have money on my student card and it's like finding free, fake money that can only be used in machines! Thanks last year self! It genuinely feels like a thrill buying from a machine since I never NEVER did that growing up, or even technically as a grown up. What a waste of money! But, the buttons. The BUTTONS CALL ME. Jolly Ranchers, you sweet-yet-off tasting candies, why must you tempt me. Since when does watermelon taste like nail polish?
13. FIN

Librarian fact: Public libraries in Ontario used to subscribe to Playboy! Why did they stop? Because they kept getting stolen and the budgets couldn't keep up! Yay librarians of the '70s and '80s for giving the finger to censorship! Also, I think it would be great if you started leaving issues of Playboy around the cottage - stir up some cottage gossip!!
Salut Marianne!
Guillaume me dit qu'il aimerait bien que je collectionne les magazines Playboy moi aussi ;o)
