So we were planning to have a couple over to our place for dinner and to see the apartment. It's an old friend of R's, but not a close friend. More of an aquaintance. Anyway, we clean like mad and I make dough and cut up all our veg and arrange everything nicely on plates. Like, we set up for guests.
She shows up on time and tells us that her companion is too anxious to meet us (?) and he's not coming in, so she's really sorry.
Us: What?
Her: He's nervous to meet you guys
Us: Oh. Really? [pause] Okay, well.
Her: So, this is the place!
[We give her a quick tour]
Me (not getting it): Wait, so are you staying then?
Her: No, well, he's waiting for me in the car.
Me: Oh. Right. [I pointedly look at all the food laid out for four people]
[She leaves with sorry's and thank you's and I'd love to have a proper visit before you go's]
R: She told that she has plans with her family tonight, so that's where she's going.
Me: [rage blackout]
Me: So she knew she wasn't coming but she let us clean and make dinner for them and then couldn't pick up the phone and tell us that she found something better to do? Then basically lied and said her boyfriend was having anxiety when really he was probably just waiting for dinner at her parent's place?
R [totally pissed]: We're not friends anymore or ever again.
Me: Well, obviously.

Hey, all.. So just to clarify a bit: This is my 'ex' and what happened this fine evening really, sadly, doesn't surprise me at all. I tell ya' if it's not one thing, it's another with her. I thought the idea of being friends could work but no... even being her friend requires way too much effort and always seems to just end up in the 'this is not good for me' category. It just re-affirms why I ended things in the past and ran like hell!!

From the sound of it, I would say that these people definitely fall in the "suckiest sucks that ever sucked" category.
On the bright side, you now have a clean apartment, and leftover food! Sweet.
