It is EXPERIENCE LESLIE FEIST SOMEHOW. Get her record "Let it Die", see a show (I repeat SEE A SHOW), download something (then get her album and support her becaue it's totally worth it and she is fantastic). Something.
So, right. We caught Feist (opening bands Elkis (sp? very good band) and a group called...uhh...I forget. Whatever, they were okay) last night at the Capital and she was fantastic. She started her set alone on stage, just her voice and a looping machine. She created a deep and layered vocal landscape and sang abover herself and it was so good. So we're like, yeah, okay (all blasé, you know how calm I am when I'm excited). So you can sing. But can you put on a show???
THE ANSWER IS YES.
She sang awesomely, with a fun band, sometimes on her own, sometimes not so much. She engaged the crowd and controlled us without being weird. It was kickass. Three encore songs, one including the other bands and it was superb. I haven't been so thoroughly pleased wiht a show in a long time. We got the tickets in November and it was toally worth the wait, and totally worth more than the $20 for the ticket. So, so good. She's got such a unique but effortless voice, and she knew what she was doing. She was fun to watch on stage, since she's expressive and interesting and reacts to the crowd, so we felt like she was enjoying herself and not just punching the time clock. She sang a few new songs, to be on her upcoming album (recording starts in a month! hip!hip!hip! houraa [p.s. do that with a French accent..i.e. eep eep eep oo-raa, it's bette that way. Thanks R!])!
She had floogle horn for pete's sake ! And interesting percussion! And some kind of weir mini acoustic guitar! Kickass show.
So that was cool.
Pete Elkis was the opening band, and they were really good as well. I definitely recommend checking them out, especially if you're into the Jack Johnson vibe. M talked to him after they opened and he's apparentlya nice guy (and a new pal of M's, so hey, support Canadian music!). Definitely worth staying up for.
The only thing that made me frown was the stupid stamp they used when they let us in. It's a web site for a stupid product or service! I refuse to acknowledge what it is! That's so stupid! Don't advertise ON me! That's freaking offensive. If anyone asks what's on my hand, I'm going to tell them it's the address for a product or service that steals from small children and runs puppy mills in Guatamala, and I've kept their address on my hand to remind me that they are a service or product that believes in exploitation and pain for capital gain and sadistic pleasure. Bastards. I'm no passive billboard. I'm a passive-aggressive billboard. And don't you forget it.
Have a good day! Wander over to Feist's website and hear wonderful magic! Or got to New Music Canada on my side bar, yype in Feist and hear wonderful magic (I love the song "It's cool to love your family" she didn't play it last night, but I never screamed it out, so it's my own fault).
Have yourselves a good day. I'm doing a pseudo-experiment on how my body reacts to the simultaneous stimuli of chocolate infused coffee (a rarity in my body. the coffee, not the chocolate), lack of sleep, Australia tickets, and fresh concert memories as they slam into the reality of my day.
Tonight: celebratory wine and Revenge of the Sith with family (starting cartoons= Clone High, thanks B!)
Have yourselves a stupendous day.
