my house smells nice

And here is why:

mmmm. everything-within-reach bread is nutritious and delicious, and way cheaper than buying anything. Sometimes cutting corners is cool.

I'm also realizing just how easy it is to post pictures, so hopefully I'll put that to good use.

My friend Batman (yeah, I know Batman, cool eh?) had an interesting post about commercialism and the holiday season. It's true that the holidays are way out of control in terms of maketing, I mean, when Bell Canada thinks it's a good idea to replace all the phone shelters with season-specific custom she;ters in multi colours, you know there's a fundamentally sick core to society.

i understand the ideas of marketing (basically, anyways) and the importance of economy (again, basically, I'm sure) and while Bell canada isn't the cause, it sure is a symptom. without emotion or drama, to break it down to it's simplest points, a city that can spend however many hundreds of thousands of dollars on seasonal phone shelters in the spirit of money making, should have no-one freeze to death outside this holiday season. I know things are more complicated and this money is not that money etc etc, but I can't help but think that no matter how we construct a society, something's rotten when one of the richest cities ever loses life to the elements, especially when we know exactly what's coming.

Knit something fo someone in need, and if you get a chance, find out if Bell has any policy of charitable donations. If now, write and ask them why. Because there is no reason why. I suppose I should research that myself and report back. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

Otherwise, holiday commercialism sucks, but then, maybe just choose not to participate. It takes more time, but really, if you think about fighting crowds, planning and buying everything, why not just stay home, bake something, send some cards to people you love and have a party or something. It's not always that easy, but you'd be surprised how easy and appreciated wal-Mart free holidays can be.

Ooh, speaking of Wal-Mart (Sprawl-Mart), I read today that it costs the US government (i.e. taxpayers) $400,000 per wal-Mart in emergency health care, employment benefits etc due to the extra low wages and so-on. I was appalled!

Since when does the U.S. have emergency care benefits?

Oh, low blow. But for real, if you thought it was low low cost shopping, there is yet one more reason it's totally not. Just one of the many.

hm. I have to get back to planning and thinking and I guess putting my money where my mouth is. Here's to a crowd-free holiday season. My goal is 60 minutes or less of mall music total this season. So far so good, but it's not panic time yet...

hasta luego amigos
xoxo
