So, you may or may not know we were thinking of moving to Hawaii, then BC, then we were thinking of just spending a few months in Hawaii, and there was that short period where I was convinced we needed to move to Finland. Well, we've decided that after I graduate and after we go to a wedding in Alberta, we are going to:
Bike from Vancouver to Los Angeles! Yeehaw! It's like 2000 miles or something, and we are stoked! We are setting up a travel blog over at changedgears.blogspot.com (nothing there yet) and we plan to write about our planning, preparation and costs of the trip. While on the tour I am really hoping to keep an accurate tally of how much we spend on major stuff like food, lodging/camping and other stuff, like parts and random expenses. It'll be cool to know how much it costs to cycle and camp our way down the left coast.
So! So much to do, of course and we are researching like mad. We're learning about cycle touring, equipment, route planning and preparation. There is a great cycle club called adventure cycles and they produce cycling maps. Their route maps are made for cyclists by cyclists and they include info like bike shops, food and water, lodging hostels and camping along the way, along with narrative and map directions.
And so it begins. We have only one major obstacle for this trip (so far) and its our dear and loved kitties. We're going to need someone to take in our muffins and look after them while we're off sleeping in downpours and hauling our butts and gear up hill passes for "recreation". If you think you might be up to the task...we can promise to make it as easy as humanly possible on you. Except you may have to hold the phone up so we can hear them breathing or snoring of something when we miss them terribly on the road. So, that's on our minds as well as bikes...which bikes? How much do we want to spend? How do you fix a bike anyway? All of the questions will be answered..stay tuned!
Squeeee!

Wow! The trip sounds awesome! I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to take the cats. It's not like you won't come back for them.
I'm very happy for you and R. I'm sure you're super excited and all plan-y and stuff.
That sounds sooo exciting, M!!!
Let me know your timeline... if I'm out west at the time, I might be able to assist with some stuff :)
We're nervous about the cat situation because it's for such a long time, 2-6 months depending on what happens to us on-route and what-not. And we're so picky, it can't be a stranger because we'd never forgive ourselves if someone was abusive or let them run away or something. so we'll make it hard on ourselves and hopefully find a good match.
Tania, we are in calgary at the end of august so we're thinking an early september start so long as we've finished with our visiting of family and friends in the area!
