I barely know where to start! I haven't seen a computer in a while so I can't keep up with my experiences...oh well, I will give it a go.
Where do I start? Halifax was awesome. My pal and I had a super good time and it was excellent to see each other again. We had fun. So cool. My buddy sorted me out for a ride to Cape Breton with a friend of hers, which was great because that would save me a bunc of money right there, plus I'd have some company on the road. But here's where it gets really, really cool.
He drives and 18 wheeler. Hooonk HOOOOOOONK! SO I got a kickass ride in a huge truck through the highlands of Cape Breton all the way up to North Sydney and then back down to Beddeck, where' I'd booked a campsite. I got to help unload groceries and see the stores at night (did I mention we left Halifax at like 8 in the evening?) and we had a great time chatting and talking to other truckers on the CB. My driver friend's trucker pal caled him up an d asked if I was cute, code name Wayne if I was cute, Fred if I wasn't. It was hilarious, at the time anyways.
Cool.
So I get to Cape Breton and decide to pay for a tour of the Cabot trail instead f renting a car. The tour company agrees todrop me off at the Ceticamp entrance of the Highlands National PArk, then I can finish the last leg later on, sothat's cool, but I guess I'll never take them up on that last leg! At the park , I met a girl called Tanis, kand we get along famously. We've been travelling together ever since which is great. She's good at talking to people, which is a great way to get some cool opportunities. We camped at the park that night (at a cost of $29, to pitch a tent! outrage!) then went out to see some live fiddle/piano at a local restaurant. We met some cool crab fishermen, but they weren't going out on their boats the next few days, so we didn't get a chance to go out with them. Then we met 4 guys from Ontario (Toronto an Ottawa mostly) who are cycling the Cabot trail. Tjey gave us a ride back to the campground and it turned out that our sites were very close together, so we hung out and got along well. They had rented an enormous SUV, and one drove while the others cycled. There was then tons of room in the car, so we went with them, back around the Cabot trail again. We convinced them that they wantted to see the northernmost point of Cabe Breton, so that's how we got up to Bay Saint Laurence and Meat Cove! We all camped together at a stunning oceanfront site pretty much ast the end of the eartch, we saw a beautiful eagle up close and yesterday on the Skyline hike we saw two moose...a mom and a baby.
I was nervous about the moose because they are ENORMOUS but this was a popular trail abnd there were lots of people and the moose apparently couldn't care less. And the calf was so cute! They passes within 6 feet of all of us gathered there, so I got some pretty cool pictures. What an experience.
The vistas here are all really really extreme and dramatic and beautiful. The sun has been out most days, though it's been rainy and cold a fair bit as well. Awesome. Tanis and I will travel on together to Newfoudland in a few days. There is a Cape Breton shuttle company which is a nice service, so we'll see what our story is. We befriended the people who own our campground and some people who live there too, and they think that we may get to go out on a crabbibg boat tomorrow morning, with the Mayor of Bay St Lawrence! Seeet, although the 3 am leaving time is a little harsh. Still, I hope that pans out, that would be a cool expeience, and then I can eat some fresh delicious crab for...breakfast? Whatever, I sure will eat some fresh crab. Mmmmm.
So! Okay, I think that's the most of it. I'm taking lots of pictures though I'm trying not to take too many of the same thing. Oh man. Where will I dump this crd of pictures, I feel so out in the middle of nowhere! Meat Cove Cabe Breton is litereally the end of the road, and the northernmost point in Cape Breton. We got some good pictures with the cycling boys (Mark, Pat, Jake, Frances) at Meat Cove, although not on my camera, so I'm really hopin ghtey e-mail it to me. It's some thing I'd really like to have, we all had such a nice time together. And Mark shares my taste in music so I got to hear some Arcade fire blasting while driving around the most beautiful drive ever. It felt like magic. I got to hear some Postal Service, some Manitoba and some other great stuff too, it felt wonderful.
Phew, okay, that's pretty good so far! I'm eating well, having fun, getting around so that's good. This trip is getting better and better, and I think it has to do with having more experience, getting better at having fun and relaxing and now I have a travel buddy so that helps a lot too.
So, good. How are all of you? Everybody seems so quiet these days which MUST mean you're all busy, right? I'll check out your various sites now that I have a chance :) I'll write again as soon as I have a chance. And if you ever, EVER have an opportunity, make sure you camp at Jumping Mouse Campground, Bay St Lawrence, Cape Breton. It'll make your trip just a zillion times more special.
Take care you guys, thanks again for checking up on me. Later!
Love,
Code Name : Wayne
PS Finkleman Update: TWO people knew Finkleman at the Highlands National Park, althoguh one was from Montreal, the other I don't remember. Still no new members though I'm really trying! Any Finklefans in Newfoundland? I'm heading your way next. MAybe Alice can run a sighting contest...i'll pitch the idea to her, so if you see me on the street in my shirt and you e-mail Alice you get a can of sardines or an honourable mention or something. Hey m! I think it's just your awesome stories :P you know, you write about seeing moose, all I have to say is "so I went to the grocery store the other day' :P Hahah, just kidding. I'm just happy you're having such a good time out there. Tonight's our first S&B without you. We'll have to propose a toast to you as founder! it's just not the same without you there ;-)
Wayne,
I love it!! Next time I have to go truckin' too. Im soo happy that you made it safely. Nova Scotia is a great place; a proud Nova Scotian right here. Keep in touch!
i can't believe you saw a moose! two mooses! wow! i'm really jealous.
Hi Marianne...............it is me..Kay from the good old USA. Loved your comments on Meat Cove. When Arthur was a kid, he was scared to death when we drove there. He advised us that there were no schools there as no bus driver would ever drive that road.
Keep on having fun and lots of good adventures!
